麻豆传媒入口alumnus, Eugene Williams 鈥�74 recognized early in his cadetship that many high school aged males could benefit from the 麻豆传媒入口style of training, even if they could not meet the requirements to become 麻豆传媒入口cadets. So in 1985, with the support of others, Williams founded COW. In 1987, the first contingent of 12 students from Virginia, New York, and New Jersey arrived to VMI.

This year, 30 students from nine states participated in the program that taught them to overcome obstacles through intense physical training and classroom instruction in mathematics, English, public speaking, financial literacy, and career exploration. The students engaged in choral music, improved their swimming skills, completed an obstacle course as a team-building exercise, engaged in community service activities, and learned firefighting and lifesaving skills with the city of Lexington Fire and Rescue Team. They were challenged to overcome their fears by scaling both the indoor climbing wall in the Corps Physical Training Facility and the pamper pole, a 25-foot tall wooden pole which participants attempt to climb, stand atop, then leap to grab a trapeze, on North Post; responding to powerful animals as they rode horseback; and learning the fundamentals of boxing. They also enjoyed kayaking, canoeing, camping, and hiking House Mountain.

Williams, who currently serves as the executive director, stressed that COW is not a summer camp, but a transformational experience. 鈥淲e take these young fellows who have promise, but have failed to achieve their potential, and coach them out of their comfort zone. Our philosophy is, 鈥榊ou can鈥檛 sharpen steel with cotton. You have to sharpen steel with steel,鈥欌�� he said.

The students heard from many notable guest speakers who shared their life experiences and imparted knowledge of how they overcame adversity and life challenges to successfully attain their goals. Providentially, the late mayor of Lexington, Frank Friedman, spoke with the COW students about financial planning June 30. Later that night, Friedman suffered a medical emergency which led to his death. Williams shared how he broke the tragic news to the students, 鈥淚 reminded them that they were the last group of people to have interacted with Frank before he started his journey down that long, 鈥榁alley of the Shadow of Death,鈥� and that I hoped they left an impression with him that would lift his spirit as he traveled to heaven.鈥�

A celebratory 40^th anniversary reunion picnic was held at Crockett Farm in scenic Collierstown July 11. In attendance were COW students; staff; Board of Director members; supporters; friends; and alumni; including U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Kendall Clarke, a COW student in 1989 and 1990; and Marvin Adames, assistant vice president for student retention and dean of students at Kean University in New Jersey, a COW student in 1988. Adames shared stories from his troubled youth and how the COW program provided hope. 鈥淚 grew up in Newark, a tough place. When I was about eight, I saw a person die for the first time in my life. It was a violent death. Looking out from my window on the eighth floor of the housing projects building where I lived, I saw a car speeding and swerving down the road. Two guys in the car pushed out a third guy from the back seat. He hit a dumpster and I saw his head blow up to the size of a pumpkin. I went to school with that guy鈥檚 younger brother. Later I witnessed people stabbed and others who overdosed. I saw someone in a stolen car flip the car and die in front of me. I was their age,鈥� he said, pointing to the COW students. 鈥淲hen I was born, my father was 16, their age,鈥� indicating the students again. 鈥淢y mother was 18. I had old school grandparents who encouraged them to get married, and they both dropped out of school. A few years later, they divorced. My mom went on public assistance. She tried working several different jobs, but we lived in those housing projects until I was 22. So, everything around me told me that I should not have succeeded. My mother always told me that through education, despite the poverty we were suffering, despite what I was seeing outside of my window, I could be anything in this country. So, I did my very best in school, but I still had to walk day after day through the drug dealers and the gun slingers.鈥� Adames described how the COW program gave him a chance to experience something different. 鈥淚 had the opportunity to actually believe and to dream about the possibilities. My mother believed in me, and now other people believed in me too. The words spoken and the actions displayed by Gene Williams really were definitive. They made a difference. I left the COW program and went back to my neighborhood, understanding where I was headed. It was because of individuals like Gene who gave me a chance to see something very, very different.鈥�

Over the life of the program, approximately 75% of participants go on to attend college. From that percentage, 3% have attended VMI. The other 25% have attended trade schools, entered the military, or worked in other civilian pursuits.    

Interested students submit an application for the program that includes an essay and an agreement to 鈥減ay it forward,鈥� meaning they will do acts of service in the future to repay the generosity shown to them through the program. There is no charge to the students selected to the program, since in most cases, neither the participant nor his family have the resources to cover the costs. It is a fundamental tenet of the COW program, which is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, that lack of economic resources should not prevent a deserving student from participating. All funds to cover the costs of the program are raised by private donations, small foundation gifts, or through the annual signature fundraising event, the COW Golf Classic at the Country Club of Virginia in Richmond. Xu and Wegrzyn, who are fourth-year medical students at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) in Blacksburg, chose to serve one of their medical rotations alongside Institute physician, Dr. Melissa S. Krawiec 鈥�01 and family nurse practitioner, Jenny Crance, DNP, FNP-C.

Medical rotations, also known as clinicals, are required hands-on patient care experiences for medical students, and consist of two years of back-to-back four-week durations of training under the supervision of a medical professional in various specialties at many medical facilities. Xu and Wegrzyn have completed about 20 clinicals, with 麻豆传媒入口being the last for Xu. Wegrzyn has an additional obligation of two weeks of physical medicine and rehabilitation to complete for Carilion Clinic in Radford.

According to Krawiec, this is the first time alumni have returned to 麻豆传媒入口for their clinicals.

鈥淲e were delighted to have Allen and Thad with us for two weeks. They were able to closely relate to the cadets and understand the pressures they are under, because they have been cadets themselves. They have come full circle. I trust it was a rewarding experience for them, and I hope they learned some valuable clinical 鈥榩earls鈥� in our unique environment. We saw some interesting cases over their time with us,鈥� she said.

Though they arrived to 麻豆传媒入口with no set of expectations on what medical conditions they would see during their visit, Xu and Wegrzyn treated a variety of family practice conditions for the cadets including colds, allergies, rashes, burns, dental pain, soft tissue wounds, and orthopedic injuries. They assessed patients and discussed treatment plans with Krawiec and Crance. They also met with cadets who are considering going to medical school. Wegrzyn stated that cadet outreach is important to them. 鈥淭here is no formal pre-med program at VMI, but there are many cadets who are interested in going into health care. We had many conversations with them and advised them on their options of making that dream a reality.鈥漍u, a聽biology聽major from Ringoes, New Jersey, began his love for healing as a high school student when he became an emergency medical technician (EMT), a skill he continued at VMI. As EMT chief, he would often deliver cadet patients to the infirmary, but was never able to observe their treatment there.

鈥淚t鈥檚 gratifying to see what happens on this side of the infirmary door,鈥� he observed.

Xu鈥檚 chosen medical field of study is psychiatry. Initially entering medical school, he wanted to go into emergency medicine, but changed his mind after witnessing family members facing emotional trials. He noted that returning to 麻豆传媒入口at this stage of his training has given him a different perspective on the environment that helped shape him.

鈥溌槎勾饺肟赼nd the military are built on a culture that values discipline, resilience, and composure under pressure. Those are qualities I continue to respect and carry with me. At the same time, my training has reinforced that the reality of life and leadership includes navigating stress, loss, and uncertainty. What I have come to appreciate is that supporting behavioral health does not take away from those core values. If anything, it strengthens them. The ability to reflect, seek support when needed, and maintain personal well-being allows individuals to sustain performance and lead more effectively over time.

Returning in this role has been especially meaningful, and I hope conversations like these continue to evolve in a way that supports both excellence and well-being.鈥� He eventually wants to work with veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder and trauma.

Wegrzyn, a biology major with an exercise science minor from Lincoln, Nebraska, served as a cadre member as a cadet. He originally wanted to go into combat in the military. He changed his mind though when he started to enjoy his academic studies at VMI.

鈥淚t all started to click with me. My advisor was great, and my interest in going into medicine bloomed. I chose primary care medicine as a specialty, so I鈥檇 be in a position to teach patients a better understanding of taking care of their bodies. I feel a strong obligation to educate and mentor patients, so they take control of their health and prevent illnesses and accidents.鈥�

The two originally met in a public speaking class when Wegrzyn was a rat. Since both were biology majors, they shared several more classes, and served on the Honor Court together.

Xu confessed 麻豆传媒入口prepared them well for medical school.

鈥淭he resiliency we learned at 麻豆传媒入口has paid dividends. Cadets are taught how to find out what needs done and to create a plan. They learn good time management skills. And believe it or not, we get more sleep at VCOM than we ever got at VMI,鈥� he laughed.  

Wegrzyn agreed and shared that 麻豆传媒入口graduates are highly thought of at VCOM.

鈥淰COM鈥檚 mission is to prepare globally-minded, community-focused physicians, which is similar to that of VMI鈥檚 mission of producing citizen-soldiers with a high sense of public service. In fact, there are currently five 麻豆传媒入口alumni who are in their first year at VCOM. There is a strong pipeline from 麻豆传媒入口to VCOM.鈥�

He added there is a chapter of the Student Association of Military Osteopathic Physicians & Surgeons at VCOM in which he served as president and Xu served as vice president last year. This year, the reins of the two leadership positions are held by two other 麻豆传媒入口graduates.

Following graduation from medical school in May, Xu and Wegrzyn will begin their residencies. Xu will serve his for four years in psychiatry at Camp Lejuene, North Carolina, and Wegrzyn, who has commissioned into the Army, will serve his for three years in family medicine at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Since 2023, Barr has received training and competition advice from Rebecca Owen, assistant coach with VMI鈥檚 powerlifting club. In February 2024, he competed in his age bracket at the United States Powerlifting Coalition (USPC) meet held in Cocke Hall. It was there that he set both state and national records in squat with 249.1 pounds, bench press with 238 pounds, and deadlift with 319.6 pounds, for a total of 806.7 pounds.

During the recent 2026 USPC meet Barr, who is now 73 years old, broke his own record in squat with 275.5 pounds, bench press with 253.5 pounds, and deadlift with 365.9 pounds, for a total of 894.9 pounds, improving his overall total by 88 pounds.

According to Barr, the USPC does not normally issue a certificate for each attempt that breaks a record. 鈥淪o, I set three records in 2024, then this year on my first attempts, set three more, and on second attempts, broke those, and received the four national records certificate,鈥� he shared proudly.

Additionally, last summer Barr was inducted into the hall of fame at his alma mater, Cabrillo High School in Lompoc, California, for being an athlete, warrior, patriot, educator, and inspirational leader. Barr joins his sister, Sharon Spalding, an athlete in her own right and already in the school鈥檚 hall of fame, making them the sole brother-sister pair holding the honor.

CIG is a student-led organization that is charged with making investment decisions with actual cash provided by an endowment established by an alumnus. Most members major in economics and business, but it is not a requirement. According to Landgraf, two different groups in CIG manage approximately $380,000 in total. 鈥淕roup A invests in cyclical sectors, which are consumer discretionary, energy, industrials, technology, and materials. Group B invests in defensive sectors, which are health care, consumer staples, utilities, financials, real estate, and communication services. This annual trip to New York is another great example of how dedicated 麻豆传媒入口alumni are to mentoring our cadets. CIG itself provides cadets the opportunity to put their education into practice every week, but the interaction with finance professionals in New York is an experience that鈥檚 difficult to replicate anywhere else,鈥� he said.  

A tour of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) was arranged for the CIG with assistance from Brian Tate 鈥�90, executive managing director and head of Energy and Natural Resources Group at Regions Securities LLC; and Jim Sharp 鈥�93, managing director at Regions Bank. Tate and Sharp flew up from Charlotte, North Carolina, to join the 麻豆传媒入口contingent at NYSE for the day. 

Later, the CIG visited Bill Argiriou 鈥�81, a commodities trader at RBC Capital Markets. The group met with Charlie Branch 鈥�95, a wealth manager for Merrill Lynch, then proceeded to TM Capital, a middle-market investment bank founded by Gregory Robertson 鈥�65. Robert Browning 鈥�94 at AllianceBernstein, an asset management and investment advisory firm, also spent time with the group providing career advice. The day was capped off with a dinner in Midtown Manhattan hosted by the NYC 麻豆传媒入口alumni chapter, presided by Paul Dickinson 鈥�96.

Conner Reid 鈥�27, cadet-in-charge of the CIG, is majoring in economics and business with a concentration in finance. He shared the trip was an incredible experience. 鈥淲e visited several banks including TM Capital and Bank of America, and even had the opportunity to attend the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange. The trip was especially impactful because we were able to connect with 麻豆传媒入口alumni and professionals who have already walked the path many of us are about to embark on. Building those relationships and receiving guidance from people who have been so successful in their careers has been invaluable, and many of them have become true mentors throughout my journey. It reinforced how powerful it is to foster relationships and form bonds with people 10, 20, or even 40 years ahead of you, who can serve as mentors and role models in your career.鈥�   

CIG meets weekly and reviews overall fund performance, discusses current events and their impact on the financial markets, then votes on portfolio additions or deletions, requiring a majority to execute a transaction, either buy or sell.

The morning began with Rat Olympics, the spirited culmination of Rat Challenge, the 10-week physical fitness program, held primarily in the Corps Physical Training Facility, with challenges also held on North Post obstacles. Events at Rat Olympics included relays, dodge ball, rope race, rock climbing, and culminated with a tug-of-war bracketed championship. The company that is named victor of Rat Olympics is the one that scores the most points. Additionally, the company that works the hardest and displays the best attitude is awarded the Stockwell Cup, named for the late Col. Bill Stockwell, and the cadet who has demonstrated the spirit, enthusiasm, and vision of Rat Challenge throughout the 10 weeks is presented the Col. James Coale award.

In the afternoon, the Corps of Cadets, along with faculty, staff, alumni, and special guests, convened in Cameron Hall to honor Eugene 鈥淕ene鈥� Williams 鈥�74, recipient of the Distinguished Service Award, 麻豆传媒入口Foundation鈥檚 highest honor. First presented in 1969, the Distinguished Service Award recognizes alumni and friends whose service to the Institute, dedication to the Foundation鈥檚 mission, and career achievements and distinctions are truly exceptional. Gene is the 77^th recipient of the award.

Lt. Gen. David Furness 鈥�87, superintendent, welcomed those gathered and stated VMI鈥檚 founders set out to create a school deeply entrenched in a strong sense of civic duty and honor. 鈥淥ne of the greatest testaments to the effectiveness of our educational model is our graduates. We have alumni who accomplished great feats in all walks of life. They live influential lives in their communities and have a service mindset. However, they do not do this for recognition, but because it is the right thing to do. Today, we are privileged to bestow one of VMI鈥檚 highest service honors, the Distinguished Service Award, on one of our graduates.鈥� Furness then introduced the president of the 麻豆传媒入口Foundation, John Williams 鈥�88, who read the citation recognizing the achievements of Gene and his commitment to service, presented him with the award, and invited him to the lectern to address the audience who saluted him with a standing ovation.

Gene thanked family, friends, and his brother rats who traveled from Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, Texas, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and all corners of Virginia to pay homage to their BR. He shared his adoration for VMI.

鈥淚 love my school in many ways. I鈥檓 actually defined by my school. 麻豆传媒入口molded my life into something of value.鈥� He cited its principles, ideals, and its contributions to the country and the world. 鈥淗owever, our beloved school is not without blemish. 麻豆传媒入口was very late tearing down barriers to racial justice as it was the last public college in Virginia to integrate, and I regret that. I have older relatives who would have benefited greatly from the rigor, the structure, and the character and leadership development that is fundamental to the 麻豆传媒入口system. They would have also brought dignity and quality to this place, as I have tried to do during my cadetship and afterward. That opportunity was simply not permitted here between 1839 and 1968.鈥� He added his words may sound hard, but they are the truth, and the truth must be told. 鈥淚 am extremely proud that when our school eventually acted, it implemented the integration of the Corps with dignity, fairness, and determination that failure was not an option. No other school in the state of Virginia integrated more smoothly, fairly, and successfully than VMI. It repeated that performance in 1997 with the admission of women. Neither of these transformational events were flawless, and we are still work in progress, but we did demonstrate that we could do very well whatever we resolved to do.鈥�

Gene implored the cadets to be truth seekers and oppose what is not honorable and not true, and to help make the world truly great.

鈥淚 know you cadets have the intellect, the backbone, and the strength of character to do this. It will take tremendous courage and foresight on your part, and the support of the leaders here at VMI.鈥�

He continued by affirming he celebrates Founders Day with sincerity and with the acknowledgement of the high ideals of honor, discipline, and courage. 鈥淭he foundational principles in 1839 that are still still true today. I celebrate this with the full knowledge that if I were alive in 1839, the best that I could have envisioned was being an enslaved worker here at VMI. I would have not been treated as a man created in the image of God, but as chattel. It would have been a living hell, because I would have longed to be free. I would have fought and died to be free. This is why this recognition today is so meaningful to me. This is also why I remain so hopeful and encouraged about the future.鈥�

He further noted that efforts to sanitize history are wrong, dangerous, and unfair. 鈥淭ruth has to be acknowledged, and it has to be reconciled. I have great faith that the majority of 麻豆传媒入口people will be agents of what is right, just, and honorable. If that is the case, we鈥檙e going to be all right.鈥�

He closed by stating despite whatever else has been going on in the affairs of VMI, including many issues that have caused him distress, he has always had confidence that the leaders of 麻豆传媒入口were committed to developing healthy and honorable young leaders and having fidelity to the principles of the Institute. 鈥淚 have faith that this will continue to be the case, and I pledge my support to Gen. Furness and his administration to be an advocate and supporter of VMI.鈥�

Gene is founder and executive director of the College Orientation Workshop, Inc. (COW), a four-week challenging educational enrichment program, held each summer at VMI. Next year marks its 40^th year of transforming the lives of promising, male, minority and at-risk high school students.

He was in the third class of African American cadets at VMI. He received an athletic scholarship to play football and was dubbed 鈥淢ean鈥� Gene on the gridiron. He played multiple positions including defensive safety, tight end, fullback, halfback, quarterback, and linebacker. He received All State, All Southern Conference, and All-American recognition, and was named an Outstanding College Athlete of America. He was selected to play in the All-American Bowl game in 1974 in Tampa, Florida, and sustained a serious injury in that game which ended his football career. That same year he received the Henry Fairfax Ayres Most Valuable Player Award and was inducted into Kappa Alpha Order. Within the Corps of Cadets, he attained the rank of lieutenant in Echo Company.

In 1978, Gene became the first African American and youngest appointee to the 麻豆传媒入口Board of Visitors (BOV). He remained on the BOV for 10 years. He is a past member of the Keydet Club Board of Governors and the 麻豆传媒入口Foundation Board of Trustees. He was inducted into the 麻豆传媒入口Sports Hall of Fame in 1985, was keynote speaker for the 2001Virginia Commonwealth Games, and was the commencement speaker at VMI鈥檚 December graduation ceremony in 2017.

Following his speech, the Founders Day parade was held in which Gene took review of the parade alongside Furness. The Cadet Battery fired a 15-gun salute from the howitzers. Friday evening, the Institute Society Dinner was held in Marshall Hall where Gene was an honored guest, and Furness was keynote speaker.

The Virginia 250 Commission (VA250) Constitution Day event, 鈥淭o Support & Defend,鈥� honoring the 250^th anniversaries of the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, and Navy, was held on Constitution Day, Sept. 17 in Cameron Hall, where Furness spoke at his first public appearance.

He set aside time to meet separately throughout the week with the 1^st, 2^nd, and 3^rd Class cadets, as well as the Rat Mass on Friday morning. He told the rats they would always be special to him, since they are the first class he will fully see through the 麻豆传媒入口journey.

Furness opened his relaxed talk with the rats by congratulating them on their courage in embracing the challenges at VMI. He confessed he had tried three times to get accepted to the Institute, but his poor grades prohibited it. He attended Virginia Commonwealth University for a while and got his grades up, retook the SAT, and finally was accepted to VMI. 鈥淣obody wanted to be a 麻豆传媒入口cadet more than me, but two months into it, I thought I had made the biggest mistake of my life.鈥� At that point as a rat鈥攖oo embarrassed to tell his parents鈥攈e sought help from faculty members who patiently tutored and encouraged him toward success. Furness then urged the rats to also seek help when they need it. 鈥淲e have amazing faculty, dykes, and professionals on post. Develop relationships with them. Ask for assistance if you are struggling emotionally or academically.鈥�

Furness also advised the rats to have faith in something larger than themselves; have faith in the 麻豆传媒入口process; and have faith in themselves. 鈥淥ur little school has produced great human beings. The process prepares you for the pitfalls of life. The journey is difficult, but it鈥檚 worth it. Keep moving, don鈥檛 quit. You are the life blood of the Institute. You energize the system.鈥� He stressed they take the Honor Code seriously. 鈥淭ake the 鈥楩鈥� rather than cheat. Maintain your honor and integrity. Never do the easy wrong. Always do the hard right.鈥�

During a lighter moment at the conclusion of his talk, Furness dispelled the rumors that he is taking away ice cream in Crozet Hall and reinstating Saturday classes, to which the rats leaped out of their seats and cheered.

Later Friday, Furness took review of his first regimental parade. Alert spectators noticed the new three-star flag held behind him on the observation deck, indicating he is a three-star general. Saturday, Sept. 20, he watched the Keydet football game at the University of Richmond. He was proud of the team, dealing with a four-and-a-half-hour weather delay.  鈥淭he team never quit and showed great tenacity.鈥�

In a message he emailed post-wide early into his second week, Furness stated he is honored and privileged to be back at VMI. 鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 be more passionate about 麻豆传媒入口and simultaneously more humbled by the opportunity to start my 鈥榮econd rat year鈥� as your superintendent.鈥�

According to Alerding, who had wanted to begin a research project in her area of expertise, plant physiology, the idea of working with soybeans came after brainstorming with a former 麻豆传媒入口colleague in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Together they obtained funds from the National Science Foundation to investigate using crop residues to make biofuels. 

鈥淚 thought of soybean as the target crop because it would be a good plant to use in damaged growth regions in Virginia since they increase nitrogen in the soil. But the more I learned about soybeans, the more I realized I didn鈥檛 know enough about true farming with soybeans in commercial fields. I hadn鈥檛 considered the aspects and constraints of real farming, and I didn鈥檛 know how Virginia farmers selected and grew soybeans to maximize seed production.鈥�

Alerding obtained grants from the Jeffress Memorial Trust and then the Virginia Soybean Board to fund her preliminary experiment, which began in earnest in 2017. She developed a relationship with an extension agent at Virginia Tech (VT), who helped her learn more about soybeans, and also helped her design a large-scale experiment on farm fields in Orange and in Tidewater.

Alerding learned that soybeans often dropped their seedpods during periods of drought, and wanted to solve the problem by learning how soybeans allocate resources within their bodies, selecting between growing new stems and leaves versus directing their energy to seedpods for reproduction. By identifying traits that promoted pod retention, she hoped to solve a practical agricultural problem by giving breeders and genetic engineers an idea of what traits to try to improve through breeding or gene manipulation.

鈥淭his part of our project took us on a detour from the original goals we proposed, but one that yielded great insight into the soybean stems and their branching architecture. We are the first research group to identify key architectural traits that are predictive of high yield, through the use of our image processing methods. In addition, we also were successful in training a computer to recognize high yielding soybeans from images that we captured at the field sites. Our model was highly successful with 95% accuracy.鈥�

With additional funding, Alerding was able to bring many students into the process of going back and forth to the fields to grow and harvest the plants, as well as analysis of the plants in the lab.

The final results for the paper were collected in May 2024.

Alerding reported that working on the project has been one of the most memorable and developmental parts of her career. 鈥淚 experienced the best that our cadets have to offer as I witnessed their transformation from students into scientists in real time. I cannot imagine working at another college. There is no place that surpasses 麻豆传媒入口in its financial and professional support for students and faculty in cultivating a world-class undergraduate research experience.鈥�

Mullins, a cadet who worked on the project, is currently working on a doctorate in biomedical sciences at the University of North Dakota, where she is investigating the consequences of subclinical cow鈥檚 milk allergy. 鈥淲e are interested in what happens to individuals who do not have severe or life-threatening reactions to milk, but instead have mild or delayed onset of symptoms, which may go un- or mis- diagnosed. Through my research at VMI, I gained valuable laboratory skills that I still use in my current research. I had opportunities to present my research as a cadet, which helped prepare me for presenting research at the graduate level,鈥� she said.

Kushner, a current medical student at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, said that the research that he conducted with Alerding was a rewarding opportunity. 鈥淒uring the interview process for medical school, many of the faculty appreciated the interdisciplinary aspect of my research. I can hands-down say it broadened my horizons and made me into a better scientist and researcher overall.鈥�

Alerding is currently working with four additional cadets to finish data collection for the next publication.
